thesis

I'm working on my thesis. I would like to know if you have any information on why the flag of the USA came into existence, and when? I'm comparing the flags of the English-speaking countries, and how they have one common mother, but their flags differ, also the symbols are different. I would be grateful if you could advise certain sites or books I can check...many thanx
