    Hi,
I have been in the discussions on Facebook about this flag. It is very suspicious - I do not believe it is a Civil War period flag. The materials and stitching do not look any older than the 42-star flag in question, and it could even be of mid 20th century vintage.

Yea the more I look at it, it just doesn't add up. But on the 42 you think it looks period?

I believe the 42 star flag could be period. That is, I do not see anything in the photos that would lead me to believe otherwise. The key is the straight line stitching of the stars. That was almost exclusively replaced by zig zag stitching in the mid 1890's and was the primary way of doing stars until the massive embroidery machines came along in the 1950's. Large flags still have zig zag stitched stars.
