    I am sure one of Whitney's goals was to overcome many of the false and/or misleading illustrations and descriptions of colonial and revolutionary war flags, so I would not be surprised if he sought out the most un-conventional rendering he could.

    Unfortunately, in the book he does not discuss the origin of the motto in the text (page 45) except to say it was DONT TREAD ON ME that was the motto used on the various flags.

    Concerning the design of the "First Navy Jack", my 2002 Raven article discusses the depiction of the snake and the "on" vs. "upon" in the motto in some detail. The bottom line is that there really is no authentic version, because the flag is more-or-less mythical -- it most likely did not even exist during the Revolutionary War.
