    Thanks, UJ -- fascinating story! From the brief views of the document, it looks like the signatures are in the same handwriting as the body of the declaration (as opposed to the one here at the Archives which has the original signatures). Also, it sounds like the Chichester document had originally had an later date. Based on those observations, I'd say that it is a copy of the original. Still an amazing find, however. It will be interesting to learn more about how it found its way to Britain.

    I hope it wasn't the result of ill gotten plunder but I suspect it probably was. Perhaps a Scotland Yard detective might be put on the case to solve the mystery.
