How many American Flags have there been?
Since the 13 star flag was adopted in 1777 there have been 27 official variations.
You can see a list of those variations (in numbers of stars), when they were used, and which states were included, at this site http://www.americanlegionpost109.org/files/brochure_27_flags.pdf
This number does not include the "First American Flag" known as the Grand Union flag, which simply added 6 white stripes to the British Red Ensign. The Grand Union flag symbolized American solidarity while still loyal subjects of the British crown. After our Declaration of Independence in July 1776, only a minor modification to the Union of that flag was necessary, namely subsituting a symbol of union of 13 states for the symbol of union of England and Scotland.
