IMG_4467.JPG IMG_4469.JPG IMG_4471.JPG IMG_4470.JPG Hello all this is my first post to the forum. I am a collector of all things military, a hoarder I guess. ( If you were to ask my wife ) And about a year ago I bought a Naval Jack from an Estate sale, well because it was cool! It is from 1910 and a 46 star flag. I want to learn where it was used. I have read that it was flown from the bow while in port, is this correct? Also the size of flag, a number 4.... where would it have been used. or more directly what type of ship? I look forward to learning about my flag and all of yours Thank you!

  2. I’m glad you managed to find the right spot to post this! I’m a long time member but I haven’t been active for some time. Your private message cane straight to my email though so here I am!

That’s a really nice Union Jack you have got here! The number 4 references to size. It will be interesting to learn if there is a specific size used on a particular type of ship. That’s not something I’ve din3 any research on

    Hello, Hutch!

    Welcome to the USA-FLAG-SITE Forums!

Here's a GOOD place to start your search :

U.S. Navy National Ensign/Flag Sizes & Union Jack Sizes.

    FROM : https://www.history.navy.mil/resear...m/title-list-alphabetically/f/flag-sizes.html

    The NATIONAL ENSIGN

The National Ensign consists of a blue canton with one star for each state, and field with 13 alternating red and white stripes to denote the first 13 states of the nation. The President standardized the sizes by executive order in 1912.

FLAG Size Number, Hoist Length (in feet) x Fly Length (in feet):
    1. 20.00' x 38.00'
    2. 19.00' x 36.10'
    3. 14.35' x 27.27'
    4. 12.19' x 23.16'
    5. 10.00' x 19.00'
    6. 8.94' x 16.99'
    7. 5.14' x 9.77'
    8. 5.00' x 9.50'
    9. 3.52' x 6.69'
    10. 2.90' x 5.51'
    11. 2.37' x 4.50'
    12. 1.31' 2.49'

(U.S. Navy "Boat" Flags Are Listed As Being Sizes 9, 10, 11, and 12.)

    The UNION JACK

The "Union Jack" consists of a blue field with white stars to represent each State of the Union. The blue Union Jack's white Stars are arranged in the same pattern as the Nation Ensign's "Union".

JACK Size Number, Hoist Length (in feet) Fly Length (in feet):
    2. 10.23' x 14.44'
    3. 7.72' x 10.91'
    4. 6.56' x 9.26'
    6. 4.81' x 6.79'
    7. 2.77' x 3.91'

[ If memory serves me correctly, the numbered SIZES listed for the enumerated Union Jacks are the same sizes as the "Unions" (Cantons) of the same numbered National Ensigns/Flags. Meaning, a Size 4 Union Jack is the SAME size as the Union (Canton) of a Size 4 National Ensign/Flag. ]

I hope this helps you with your search to find out more about your treasure!
