Default Township flying flag in rain

This morning while driving through Monson MA in the RAIN I noticed that many town building were still displaying the American Flag. These included Town Municipal buldings and other areas in the town area. I stopped at the local Police Dept. and inquired why they had not been taken down as a result of the rain. The Dispatcher told me They could not find time to do that. Strange I heard no sirens or saw no unusual activity. I even saw a patrol vehicle leaving the parking lot in an unhurried manner. Whats with that? Maybe the flags were those all weather types.

    Hello, REC1 !

Welcome to the USA-Flag-Site Forums !

While I'm here in Oregon and not there in Monson, MA, I think it's somewhat safe to assume that the majority of the American Flags you saw flying from the town's municipal buildings (in the rain) were of the "all-weather" variety.

Most of today's "commercial grade" outdoor Flags are made of either nylon or polyester. Both materials are much stronger and last longer than the more "traditional" cotton does, and they can withstand a lot more weather-related "stress" too.

Having said that, I think it's also important to point out that NO Flag is completely "weather-proof". Hopefully, the "powers-that-be" there in Monson have the good sense to lower the Flags when there is truly BAD weather predicted, or on the way, such as sustained high winds, or a hurricane, or heavy ice and snow, etc.

Thank you for bringing your Flag-related question to our Forums !!!

Its important to note that the 'flag code' was written in the 1920s, whilst the use of nylon in flags was not really started until the 60s or thereabouts

The flags of the 20s and before were not colorfast, like a lot of the ones around today, thanks to a lot of experimenting with dyes

The flag code is not law, and therefore nobody can be prosecuted for not upholding its guidelines

In this case, with flying the flag out in the rain, the use of common sense goes a long way! In very very bad weather, like heavy snow, hurricanes monsoons, high winds etc- it would be best for your flag to remove it, and put it back when the weather is suitable
Regular rain is not any problem to most flags these days- being made of nylon

I am in support of the flag code being updated to suit the modern world and made more clear
