| The Washington Post ran an obituary on Friday for Donal McLaughlin, who died on 27 September at age 102. Mr. McLaughlin designed the original world-and-olive-branches logo for the UN that later became the UN flag. He was the graphics director for the original UN conference in San Francisco in 1945, and created the design as an identification button for the delegates. Mr. McLaughlin's original version showed North America directly below the north pole, and cut off the bottom half of South America. It was later modified by a UN cartographer, who rotated the globe to make the Prime Meridian vertical and extended it farther south, so that it included all of the inhabited continents. The blue color was deliberately chosen to contrast with red, which is often associated with war. Peter Ansoff
