Default Veteran Burial Flag

Is there etiquette to receiving the burial flag? I am to be the proud recipient of my grandfather's burial flag next week. I am not military. Is there anything before, during, or after the ceremony that I should be aware of (other than proudly displaying at home of course)? There will not be a casket or burial. Is there a certain way I should hold or carry? Do I handshake the giver? More informal services will move to another location. Can I leave in car? Your recommendations? Thank you.

Default Re: Veteran Burial Flag

Hi, MikeMan -- welcome!

If they're following normal procedure, the leader of the funeral detail will present the flag to you, folded in a "tricorn," and say a few appropriate words to you (the exact wording depends on which of the military services is involved). Other than common sense (thank the leader for his/her remarks, and treat the flag carefully so that it doesn't get dropped or soiled, etc.) there are no particular rules that you need to follow.

I hope that all goes well -- it will be a sad but memorable experience.

Best regards,

Peter Ansoff
