Default What kinds of flags do you fly?

I am curious to know how many of us here fly something other than than our country's flag. For eaxample, we had Pirate's Day, and there are statehood days, innternational days, Revolutionary and Civil War days, etc.

I have set up a poll to see what types of observations people make with flags. Please let us know!

By the way, I am defining national flag as any country's flag so our international members can participate as well.

I answered "yes" to several categories that need asterisks of one sort or another:

Holiday: I don't have any holiday flags per se, but I sometimes do displays for particular holidays. For example, on Christmas I fly the flag of Christmas Island and ICS signal flags spelling out "Joy" and "Peace." On St. Patrick's Day I fly the Irish national flag, the green and gold harp flag, the Four Kingdoms flag and the "Starry Plough" flag from the 1916 rising.

Family Crest: Like many other NAVA members, I have a personal flag that I fly from time to time.

Group Affiliation: The Federation Internationale des Associations Vexillologiques (FIAV), NAVA and the Chesapeake Bay Flag Association (CBFA) all have flags -- I display them as as set once in a while.

One of these days I will get around to putting up my flag page on my website. Makes sense now that they a starting to accumulate in my flag closet and elsewhere. (But I have to get all my Ireland trip stuff done first - photos, journal, blogs, etc) - Oh and for those about to ask, yes I did pick up an Irish flag in Ireland. Its only a printed poly flag but the charm of that one comes from where it was purchased, not what its made of.

But to the original topic -

Yes to the US flag on an almost daily basis, weather permitting. I also just added a cotton Bennington flag to my collection, not sure where "Historical flags" falls into the poll options. Its a well made flag traditional cotton, and the canton design is all embroidered including the "76" Might have to fly that one on very special days. (And when I do does it go up in addition to or in place of the current US flag, recall I do have two perfectly suitable holders/staffs)

I also have a State of Ohio flag that I bought for the Ohio Bicentennial back in 2003. (hey its the only state flag in the shape of a burgee, almost want to go out and buy a flag of Nepal so I can have both oddball shaped flags...)

Sports flags:

I am a big Xavier Musketeer basketball fan, comes from being an alumni - so I have 7 different designs of the Xavier Musketeer flag, seems they change it every year or so, or get new paterns in. That usually goes up from November - March excepting for holidays.

Last year the Cincinnati Reds gave out a free 3x5 reds flag on flag day - I flew that most of this summer.

Other noteworthy flags in the collection would be an Olympic flag, the REAL pattern not the USOC licenced patterns. I also have a Bavarian flag for Oktoberfest.

I do have loads of novelty fun flags for the holidays, the seasons, patriotic themes, etc.

Of course inside the house I have the UN member nations desktop set of flags. I also have a semaphore signal set just as a conversation piece. (In other words don't ask me to use it at any rate of speed except slow)

Good point. I should have added 'Historical' under "War/Battle Event". That would be where I would ask future poll posters to place it.
