When you are attending a sporting event and there are 2 flags displayed at the event...

most people will pay attention toward the field rather than to a pole somewhere up at the top of the stadium
thats prob why they bring a flag on the field cos thats where people look

so to answer- look at the flag on the field!

Yes, this is what I would think but the announcer always announces to the crowd, "Please turn your attention to (the flag at the end of the football field) as we sing the National Anthem."

It makes me wonder why the marching band bothers to bring out the US flag at all...

Except in special cases, I really can't see how it matters. Both flags are symbols of the nation, and people can face the one that's closer and/or more visible.

The exception is when one of the flags is the "official" one that denotes the nationality or identity of the venue. A good example is the ensign that flies at the stern of a US Navy ship. When boarding and leaving the ship, the protocol is to face toward the stern and (if in uniform) render a military salute. This is true even if there are other US flags displayed elsewhere on the ship (for example, a presentation flag on the quarterdeck). Similar logic applies when a particular flag is the focus of a flag-raising or other ceremony.
